Scenario number one- The people finally rise up against the two-bit communist government of China, and in a last ditch effort to save it's pathetic murdering behind, they invent America as the enemy, throw a blanket of propaganda out, while launching a missile at the United States and claim it it was done in self-defense. Nut-cases who are willing to murder entire towns full of women and children for a few tax dollars, could do just about anything.

Scenario number two- The communist of Russia come back in power and in order to cement their grip on the people launch a missile toward one of our allies in Europe.

Scenario number three- Saddam buys a diesel submarine from Russia, puts together a nuclear missile and sets sail for the U.S. Coast.

I could go on, the point is twenty or thirty years from now a variety of scenario's could come into play which we would consider a serious threat. It's part of the unknown and unknowable, and if we don't sieze the initiative now and create a viable defense against nuclear (or conventional) missiles, we may seriously regret it. It's too late to say after the fact, "I was wrong, I'm sorry".

A wise nation "acts softly but carries a big stick". Not the other way around.

By the way, my Captain scenario isn't crazy, you're just too ignorant of submarine missile systems to believe it.
