""Is there going to be an explosion of multiprotocol switches and adapters to interconnect hybrid collections of these interconnects?""

""Data centers at storage service providers and within the motion picture industry will involve 10,000's of clients, 1000's of storage devices, petabyte size disk storage and throughput of 100's of gigabytes per second. This paper will present an advanced storage and file system architecture, "Lustre", pioneered with the Carnegie Mellon University, that is expected to support such clusters. Work in progress supporting "Lustre" will be described""

I clipped the above from your post J.

J. I think the Optical Fabric Director (FC, Infiniband,iSCSI,GB Ethernet) over LAN/MAN/WAN transparent optical networks, fits the bill for these two paragraphs. If the cost of optics falls far enough, we will see some kind of new form of "Intelligent Optics" devices. Just wild speculation based on a gut feeling that low cost high performance optics will eventually affect networks in ways not thought of yet.

I wonder if Free Space Optics will ever invade the Data Center. The other day I was picturing a huge Data Center with Free Space Lasers shooting from the wall, across the tops of the racks passing through a special lens at the top of every rack that could detect the light pulses (with sensors for each color of light, around the inner diameter of the lens holder), for various colors of light (would it work?). I wonder if it is possible to shoot a laser the length of a football field, through hundreds or thousands of lenses that act as receivers for data pulses of light? The return path could be laser aimed at central location on the Data Center Wall that had an optical receiver. It would sure be cheaper than having to run fiber optic cable throught the data center and in the enclosed dark environment of a data center the Free Space Optics would work incredibly well. It would be pretty cool if it worked and the Data Center of the future had thousands of laser beams shooting around the room between devices and sensors on the walls and ceilings. Maybe it would just make good science fiction for a movie.
You heard it here it first, Free Space Optics for the Data Center. Will it be Fact or Fiction, who knows?

Cheers,
Joe
