Your budget is quite a bit more healthy than ours!

No, I just don't need much so I indulge myself on what I do buy. I used to be a big-time shopper. Now I might set foot in a mall once or twice a year, if that, and I run in, grab what I need, and run out. Maybe ten or fifteen years ago I got on this life simplification kick. Glad I did. I'm just happier when I can see all the walls in my closets. And all the walls of my freezer. Can't imagine buying more than one roll of paper towels at a time. Can't imagine buying meat and freezing it. Yech! Never tastes the same afterward.

I have a good friend who adores Costco and goes there as much for entertainment as anything. I've gone with him. I think in a previous life I would have liked it. Now I shop for meat at Whole Foods where they have free range, antibiotic free, privately processed meats and I eat them the same or the next day. I buy everything trimmed and deboned. It's the only place I know that sells deboned chicken thighs.

The most fun I ever had shopping was way back when I was just out of college and married. We used to go to an "auction" in a county-fair type environment. There was a big auditorium and they had lots of product. They went through a mock auction process and then offered the product, say a coffee pot, for just a few dollars. You'd raise your hand and someone would come by with your merchandise. Then you'd sit and watch the action until you found something else you wanted to buy. That was our regular Saturday night entertainment. We'd spend hours there.

This is the book that started my simplification kick.

I think it would be great fun to study people's shopping habits. Maybe I'll do that some day--take a class and do a research project or sign on for temp or volunteer work where they do that sort of thing.
