The subject of discussion was Ronald Reagan. I understand that changing or ignoring the subject is your favorite tactic when cornered; unfortunately for you, it doesn't always work.

Reagan is the President whose policies brought about the collapse of the Soviet Union. He brought America's strongest point- -its economy- -to bear on the USSR's weakest point- -its economy. The US could re-arm, perform R&D for a totally new, revolutionary, and highly threatening weapon (a ballistic missle defense system), and produce quite sufficient goods and services for civilians, all the same time. The Soviets creaking, socialistic quagmire had no hope of keeping up, but it had to, and it collapsed making the effort.

Yes it was expensive at the time. How expensive would another 12 or 20 or 30 or 50 years of Cold War have been?

Would there have been that great, amazing economic boom of the 90's at all?

It wasn't expensive; it was cheap. And Ronald Reagan was the guy who insisted we stay the course in the face of endless criticism.

He was great President. Give him his due.
