Energy policy is a matter of national security. If a terrorist wanted to shut down the west coast, taking down a few power lines
would be the most effective mechanism.

Where does terrorism fit into the discussion? Can one type of energy or policy avoid power lines? I don't get your point.

Europe has no choice besides nuclear? Well, we do and that is my point and I differ with you that government should be able to interfere and dictate choice. Competition brings progress. No one has a sufficient grasp of the future to dictate to the present.
