I don't think the European Telcos are going to invest into GSM 850 to extend their nets. Everybody is busy throwing his money into UMTS, which is somewhere in the 2.1 GHz area.

GSM will be a legacy system in 2 to 3 years. The Telcos which cannot offer their customers UMTS services at that time will be out of business or just exploiting the existing networks as low-cost voice-only alternative to UMTS.

Not sure about the U.S., where CDMA is the name of the game.
