"IBM used the x86 architecture for years without a second source."

Could you reveal the source for this information,
please?

According to the "Inside Intel" book,
ISBN 052594141x, AMD has been
"a sparring partner" of Intel as a legal second
source for many Intel's parts since
1971, following McNamara policies of 1960's.
And the AMD as a second source manufacturer was
a must condition for IBM PC to be in 1975:

" IBM had held a gun to Andy Grove's head and told
him that signing up Sanders was what he had to do
to get the 8088 inside the PC", (page 207)
