Martin,

IMHO, I don't see the GX/Cisco announcement as directly related to the SONS/JNPR relationship. SONS/JNPR is a sales/marketing initiative and I doubt that it would have been done in reaction to Cisco winning OC-192 core GX business from JNPR. These sort of high profile marketing PRs usually take time to negotiate, although the Cisco/GX announcement may have affected the timing. The GX/Cisco decision was probably based as much on business reasons as any stated technical justification. It is significant that they won the business, I am not convinced it was because of a clear technical superiority.

As an 'open' application switching platform (Class 4/5 VoIP telephony is the first application) SONS needs to work with the most common QoS specifications regardless of vendor. Voice and media services are dependent on 'guaranteed' delivery of specific packet streams regardless of the source. Claiming 'guaranteed delivery' is not as objective as it seems and with all the emerging QOS related specs (MPLS, Diffserv, RSVP, IPv6), the providers of high speed network gear will be claiming/counter-claiming ad infinitum. Arrival of the packet is only one aspect of 'guaranteed delivery' and the devil is in the details. One person's 'guaranteed arrival' is another person's 'I got here, but missed the first act'.

Cisco has even certified several of their edge products with Sonus' OSPA program, so Sonus has a relationship with them as well.
