Eurobum1....
Some of what you say is a bit contradictory...if our ancestors taught us to do the buying, then who is doing the selling? When you short you are no less a seller than someone who is long and decides to sell....you both have a similar opinion....that the stock you are selling is going to go down. If you are long, why would you sell if you thought the stock was going higher...the only difference is the long already owns the stock, and the short is borrowing it because he feels he can replace it at a lower cost. While on a superficial level, Americans are told to "buy and hold", the inner workings of the stock market are far deeper than that. The concept of investing is very idealistic and patriotic, but lets face it.....what you see is not what you always get. We are all making bets....we are all speculators....we all have a singular objective...to make money. I'm not trying to defend short selling any more than I can justify going long...amateur or professional, being involved in the market is a risky business....but I feel that to undertake the challenge, its important to have your eyes wide open and be more realistic and less idealistic. Investors put up their money with a clear cut objective. If a fund offered higher than normal returns, with equal or less risk, and did it by playing the short side, my guess is investors would be lining up at their door. As always, this is strictly my opinion...a very humble one at that....
