Volume of patents is considered very important in striking up cross-licensing deals. It strikes fear in the heart of competing corporate lawyers.

While I tend to agree, I am of the belief quality over quantity. Also, most companies are of the belief "patent everything", therefore, they are trading one crappy IP portfolio for another.

Patent protection, however, is extremely important since it can prevent competition in that company's markets.

I guess my point is how do you know that AMD's patent portfolio is "rich" (or whatever the word you use). I recall reading that IBM makes 1.5B off of their patent portfolio. What would be interesting to see is how much royalties AMD generaties, or any company for that manner. HOwever, that may not be the best indicator.
