United Micro may be a safer buy than Lucent for investors looking to buy into
the chips, says Vincent McBride, a managing director at Credit Suisse Asset
Management. Unlike other chipmakers, which may fall further, UMC is close to a
bottom, McBride says.

Taiwan seen as winner from MSCI regional and emerging market indices adjustments. Via to Fubon, etc. could benefit from broader (85%) industry representation up to May 30, 2002. The MSCI Taiwan Index, with the potential for more than a dozen additional constituents (additions) and a couple deletions, is forecast to be a negligible loser in terms of percentage free float adjustments and broader industry representation, in the MSCI AC World Index (-6.3% weighting to a prospective 0.68% weighting on May 31, 2002). What is important is whether you, the institutional investor, follow the MSCI World Index or its regional or emerging market indices. This being said, Taiwan, on the other hand, is seen as a winner in the MSCI AC Asia Pacific Index (+18.6% weighting to 5.6% of the index), MSCI AC Asia Free ex-Japan (+31.1% to 25.8%), and the MSCI Emerging Market Free Index (+37.9% to approximately 13.9%), according to JPMorgan and MSCI information
