One needs to formulate a rule about what kind of profit is reasonable to expect from a put.

You can say that again! I made one of my dumbest moves with Ciena puts because I got mesmerized by the rising stock price (and falling put price) and did not buy the puts back. Someone referred to this earlier as getting caught "like a deer in the headlights."

Of course, the same goes with buying back covered calls when the stock drops. My lesson with Ciena puts cost me, but at least I think I have learned the lesson.
