VLNC NEWS:
From Yahoo board:Valence Licenses Battery Patents To Samsung SDI
Updated: Tuesday, May 8, 2001 12:00 AM ET By Pui-Wing Tam Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Valence Technology Inc. (VLNC, news, msgs), a provider of polymer lithium-ion battery technology, said it has signed an agreement to license out its battery technology patents to Samsung SDI, a unit of South Korean conglomerate Samsung Corp. Under the terms of the agreement, Samsung will pay Valence an upfront licensing fee of $500,000. Samsung will subsequently pay Valence quarterly royalty payments based on its net revenues from sales of lithium-ion polymer batteries. Lev Dawson, chief executive of Valence, Henderson, Nev., said the quarterly royalty payments will be "around the same range" as Valence's previous licensing agreement of 2% to 6% of net revenues. The licensing deal continues Valence's shift from being solely a manufacturer of batteries to becoming a licenser of battery technology as well. As part of the shift, Valence last November purchased rights to polymer lithium-ion battery technology patents from Telcordia Technologies Inc., inheriting Telcordia licensees such as Samsung. Now with the new licensing agreement, Samsung can also gain access Valence's films and powders that are used to make the batteries, as well as tap Valence's manufacturing know-how. "The agreement with Samsung is a pretty important validation" of lithium-ion polymer batteries, said Dawson. In a written statement, Samsung vice president Ky Hoon Ahn said Samsung intends to sell lithium-ion polymer batteries to handheld device manufacturers and other makers of portable communications and computing devices. -Pui-Wing Tam, Dow Jones Newswires; 1-415-765-8238
