Frank, I'm confused by this:

You can't map [time-division multiplexing] infrastructures to Ethernet.You can't sell leased lines over Ethernet. This just is not going to work. ATM is going to dominate.

I don't know if I'm misinterpreting what should be in the square brackets but isn't ATM a time-division multiplexing technology?

Which infrastructures is Nolle referring to? The reason I ask is that the article at Tech Encyclopedia defining ATM certainly states ethernet frames are convertible to ATM cells and vice versa. I went to his CIMI Corp site ( cimicorp.com ) and read everything publicly available he'd written on VPNs and nothing there suggested a mapping couldn't be done. Quite the contrary. So long as a server is looking at something that looks like what it can offer, it serves it up!?

What are these guys suggesting their customers do with this gadget?

Nolle: You can't sell leased lines over Ethernet.

Who is he referring to? Who is the 'you'? RBOCs? MSPs? CLECs? Utilitiy companies?

Am I mistaking a business argument for a technical one? How much more expensive is ATM than ethernet? Or is he saying cost is irrelevant? The article ends with Nolle quoted:

"Major service
providers know that ATM works, and it goes back to the issue of what
kind of equipment is on the customer premises. I bet that if you took a
sample of say, the Fortune 500 companies, you wouldn't find a single buyer
of Ethernet metro service."


Strong claim. Do you know he's on track with it? Does anyone?
