Top 10 chip tool suppliers keep gaining market share, says Dataquest

SAN JOSE, Calif.--For the third consecutive year, the world's top 10 semiconductor equipment suppliers gained market share in the booming market of 2000, said Dataquest Inc., which today released its latest industry ranking. Dataquest's new ranking shows the top 10 suppliers with 70.5% of the chip equipment sales in 2000 vs. 68.9% in 1999.

While semiconductor equipment suppliers are being hammered hard by the 2001 recession, last year was a much different story with worldwide revenues for production systems growing 84% to $33.17 billion in 2000 from sales of $17.96 billion in 1999. Last month, a senior analyst from Dataquest said the market research firm had lowered its semiconductor capital equipment forecast for 2001 to a decline of 24% as chip maker continued to cancel wafer fab projections in the downturn (see April 25 story).

Dataquest's new top 10 ranking shows market leader Applied Materials Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., with 25.3% of worldwide semiconductor equipment sales in 2000. Canon Inc. of Japan slipped down one position in the ranking to No. 8, while Novellus Systems Inc. of San Jose moving up to No. 7 in Dataquest's list. Hitachi Ltd. of Japan jumped into the top 10 from No. 14, according to the ranking (see table below).

The fastest growing top 10 supplier in Dataquest's ranking was Japan's Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Ltd., which increased its revenues by 120.6% to $1.09 billion in 2000 from $494 million in 1999. Nine out of the top 10 suppliers had more than $1 billion in sales last year compared to just four above the $1 billion mark in 1999, according to Dataquest estimates.

"Despite the strong growth in 2000, the industry is experiencing a significant slow down and this should make 2001 a year of repositioning," warned Dean Freeman, principal analyst of Gartner Dataquest's semiconductor research. "Companies that are well positioned to take advantage of the technology buys that typically take place in down years should see market share gains."

The Asia Pacific region was the fastest growing region in semiconductor equipment sales, up nearly 90%, according to Dataquest. Europe was close behind at nearly 89%. Shipments into North America were behind the world average, growing at just over 71.3%, suggesting a continued outsourcing trend to the foundries in Asia, said Dataquest.

"There was a great deal of consolidation in 2000, and it is likely this trend will continue this year as companies look to expand their core competencies and technology portfolio needed to provide the integrated processes required for semiconductor fabrication," Freeman said.
