Here's a recent series from Winmag about system resources. I'm running the same system as you minus 128 ram. Hav you checked System Configuration Utility to see what's loading at startup. Have you checked your Programs/Startup folder to see what's loading from there? Have you dumped internet cache and temp folders of all the leftover garbage.

Here's a recent article that tests system performance gains obtained from incrementally increasing RAM. According to the results, you should be hitting the sweet spot with 384mb. But depending on your use patterns, it may make little difference.

At the very least you can get an idea of what to expect in performance increase from a memory upgrade.
