What ever glory or joy was earned by building those ugly monoliths has long since past. They are superstitions of a dead culture and not worth one second of pain.

I know myself that being able to count on intense pain ending in a short time makes it more bearable, that not knowing adds demoralization and panic to the mix. </I.

I agree that it's easier to deal with pain of longer duration if you know that it will end.
