Mike-- I view the job of foreign policy as having an influence on world opinion. I have always agreed with W's recognition of the importance of world trade. While he was running in the primary, he was steadfast that we should not take a hostile stance towards China, but to influence them thru trade. Also, remember the enormous influence of the global media on influencing people in both democratic positions (and American English language) and free enterprise. Not only the media, but world travel. How many of us have either been to China or know someone who has been? This is relatively recent. I'll bet we also know Chinese who are working/studying here.

Bush, IMO (and of others) has taken a dumb stand on the anti missle crap, and this is part of the response. He has lost foreign points on that stand. In addition, it is also clear to me that, given our high human rights convictions, many countries prefer Libya and the Sudan to our surveys.

PS FWIW, I took Jerome's comment as a quote of the heat of battle and not a racist remark. I'm glad he apoligized and hope he continues to comment freely as I have learned from him.

OT:

Mike, I appreciate your input.

'If we all accept that war and hatred are the true enemy of "Man" we can all live in peace.'

Hopefully, more of us see things this way sooner rather later. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, it seems many of us have a difficult time learning that in a war we all eventually lose.

'Even after your hostile exchange with him, I think we will ultimately have another convert from the "dark side" and we will all be able to sit down and have a beer.'

Perhaps, you 're right, Mike. I hold no animosity for Jerome. norm.
