will,
Peace is beyond enlightened self interest. Mentally put yourself in a war situation, with a gun pointed at a fellow human being. Much harder to do now than when I was a kid and war was being glorified. Spielberg put an end to that forever with Private Ryan. We have no illusions left about war.
The best anti-war film i ever saw was the Americanization of Emily. I was a young man when I saw it and it was far from a great movie, but the dialogue between James Garner and an elderly English woman who had a virtual memorial in her home for all her dead relatives from early times thru WW2, affected me profoundly. Garner chastised her for making war acceptable by glorifying deceased family members. The perpetuation of the culture of war by honoring those who died in it in grotesque fashion perpetuates the institution. The true memorial for war heroes is the search for peace so no more will die.
