It's weird that Americans are so backward when it comes to breastfeeding. We are only hurting our own, but it seems a strange thing to want to do. Maladaptive- of course much of Western society seems maladaptive, look at fast food with it's proven ill effects on American children (and adults). We are waging a war against the health of our own children. Too much TV, too much sugar, too much fat, not enough exercise, little parental contact, and minimal breastfeeding. I tried to encourage a neighbor to breastfeed. She whined to me that it was too painful and quit. Now I respect we all have different tolerances for pain, but with my first child my nipples were cracked and incredibly sore for several months. It was much better with the second child- but still, there was a break in period. We are, perhaps, too accustomed to everything being easy and perfect, in exactly the way we expect it to be easy and perfect. Breast feeding IS easy and perfect- but it isn't easy and perfect right at the beginning.

As usual, a day late and a dollar short. I actually said nothing against public breastfeeding per se. In fact, I explicitly said that I had no problem with it in contexts like a department store or mall. I only addressed the question of rudeness to restaurant patrons........

Not long ago, Michels says, she attended a wedding

I don't know if I have the patients to follow out all the posts. In the first post initiating this, you implied I would approve of general harassment of nursing mothers:
