Two even more worst case scenarios from the San Jose Mercury News (5/9/2001):

``We need to prepare for a real whipping this summer,'' said Dr. Lon House, a former utility planner at the California Energy Commission and author of a report warning there could be as many as 84 days or 1,000 hours of blackouts ahead. ``We're looking at a meltdown.''

``'I hate to be a doomsayer but the worst case scenario is they lose control' of the grid, said Dan Smith, director of Regional Affairs at the Association of California Water Agencies. ``If they don't black out enough to keep the grid under control then the whole grid crashes. The state is putting out the most optimistic picture that they can.''

(To be try to be fair, these are the two worst-case possibilities in the article. The thrust of the article is that nobody knows how bad it will be.)
