in fact there are only timeless "Nows."

I have not read The End of Time but I need to go to the store today anyway and I think I'll stop by the bookstore. The most difficult part of physics is understanding precisely what people mean and a good book can sometimes provide the proper terminology.
The timeless "Nows" does echo of the concept I have alluded to. Essentially that there is the chaotic future and the fully determined past and now is the boundary where these probabilities are resolved. Barbour may be able to express that concept a lot more clearly.

I picked up the book The end of Time. It's not light reading. He (Julian Barbour) is trying to describe a state beyond our perception and so far in the first two chapters he is dancing around the problem instead of tackling it head on.
