That reminds me of what US West did a few years ago (now Qwest). They had huge layoffs, then a few months later were caught completely off guard by the huge ramp in demand for new lines (FAX, PC lines, DSL) and consequently provided extremely poor service for years. You'd think they would have been smarter about their own business... Another example of layoffs to appease Wall Street even though in doing they shot themselves in the foot a few times.
