I think we need to remember that modern market moves are momentum driven, and it's easy to visualize trader types jumping aboard a move. And once the bull captures the imagination of the public, katie bar the doors. On the last point (the public), the romance of gold and of course cocktail conversations about winnings, will be a powerful tonic.
