I do not currently own XTO but I am in agreement that it is an excellent acquisition candidate. Once Bush formally announces his energy policy I think that a lot of traders will be focusing more attention on the sector. I also think that we will see a frenzy of consolidation this summer. My favorite energy stock is HP, which is looking to eventually spin off its E&P assets.

Some of the more offbeat E&P companies might merit some attention, particularly WZR and EQTY. The management of EQTY does not have a large position in the company and two outsiders have acquired significant positions over the last year. A good chunk of EQTY's NG reserves are in California:
