Joe, [edited 2x] they recommend what they have a surplus of.:) IBM drives are the best! Many of the disk drive engineers at WDC, Seagate etc were trained by IBM. Sure, IBM manufactures in Asia.

[edit: actually there's probably very little quality difference between the brands. The box makers multi-source and insist that all disk drives perform the same].

Here's an article from Tom's Hardware (a widely followed and respected hardware guru) about IBM Drives.

former joe

i'm still looking over your post and trying to sort it all out. thinking maybe rather than offer comments on what you're doing, i'll share what i've done. would that help? i did install a second physical drive, and i did use partition magic software, and i am running two operating systems. i like the result.

what would be most useful to you.... for us to read your proposed scheme and comment, or share what we are doing?

and i can't get back to you on it for a bit....

sounds like you're having some fun, former joe

:)
