I just tried to defrag the regular way. Non safe mode way that worked so smoothly day before yesterday.

"Locked by a disk utility."

Strange.

Since tomorrow the Big Change happens, i'm thinking of uninstalling Netscape just to see what happens when i then try to defrag.

Should I install EndItAll on my new computer to use when I defrag? Unless it is writ that NO computer will EVER defrag for me....

EDIT: I went through all the step in your Making IE Your Default Browser link and tried again... Still locked.

Mark and tc,

this is surprising.

I decided to uninstall Netscape, just to see what would happen when I tried to defrag w/o it on the computer.

I still get Locked by a disk utility!

I then tried to run ScanDisk. I got this message:

Scan Disk cannot check this drive (local disk C) now because the disk is not properly formatted or a program such as a disk utility has locked it. Format the disk or wait for the utlity to finish, then restart ScanDisk.

Isn't "formatting" the same as erasing? I can't format Drive C, can I?

I am so puzzled. It wasn't a war between browsers after all. The good news about that is that i won't worry about conflict problems when i download Netscape on the new computer. The bad news is the mystery of it.

I'll run defrag and ScanDisk in Safe Mode before I do my final backups, but I thought first I should come here and share the grief with my Post Comptrauma Stress Syndrome Support Group....

tc

you are, of course, most welcome.

i check for new virus definitions at least once a day. it becomes a small entertainment of sorts to find new ones waiting and to give the thread a heads up.

:)
