Ask Not for Whom the Bell Tolls

After a sharp dip at the open, stocks are trundling along in a fairly narrow range as the morning continues. Traders seem to still be discouraged by Cisco's reports after the close last night, as well as word that National Semiconductor will miss its earnings expectations. Still, volume has been light again today, and there's little sense of distress in the market today. There is some sentiment that this week's dip may also be partly attributable to some profit taking as well. Looking at the larger picture, there is cause for optimism as investors see another half point rate cut resulting from Tuesday's Fed meeting, and both the Nasdaq and DJIA are well off their bottoms for the year.
