Revenue rose to 4.69 trillion yen or $38.35 billion, the company says. Profit jumped 45 percent to 365.5 billion yen, or about $3 billion, compared with 252.1 billion yen the previous year. The progressive carrier says mobile subscribers rose nearly 23 percent during the fiscal year to more than 36 million. Of those, 21.7 million use DoCoMo's i-mode wireless Internet services -- a fourfold increase from the previous year. The company expects a nearly 12 percent hike in subscribers for fiscal 2002, with a targeted i-mode increase of 37 percent, or an expected 29.8 million users. U.S. carriers have kept a close eye on DoCoMo's i-mode services, looking to adapt the concept to suit American consumers. So far, U.S. wireless consumers have been slower to accept the mobile Internet than their Asian and European counterparts. Earlier in the year, DoCoMo purchased a 16 percent stake in AT&T Wireless in part to jump-start a version of i-mode in the United States. A analysis released today from research firm InfoTech shows that wireless Internet services are ready for takeoff in the United States. The study, Winning the Wireless Internet Game: Global Learnings Applied to the U.S. Market, includes surveys of U.S. user expectations, along with comparisons of i-mode as well as SMS and WAP-based offerings. 'Assuming that the wireless Internet will wait for 3G deployment before it can take off is naive,' says John Freidenfelds, a senior consultant with InfoTech. 'Wireless Internet is coming to the U.S., one way or another, sooner rather than later.' Previous Stories:
