"it just seems like 9 hours w/o a smoke"

oh my god, yes. before leaving san fran for philly (a flight i've made numerous times), and back when i was a smoker, i used to enter the room at the sf airport where everyone was sucking down as much nicotine as they could prior to boarding. every cigarette had an inch and a half of richly glowing ember on its end rather than ashes, and everyone's eyes were crossed as they inhaled for all they were worth in anticipation of six hours without a hit. as you may know, california has a no smoking in public buildings ordinance.

then i'd hit the philly airport and every single person, right down to little children and their pets, would have a cigarette dangling from their lips as they roamed about the airport. i'd glance at my wife as i flipped a lucky out of the pack, and grin, "welcome to the east coast, baby".
