My thinking runs along these lines: I find it somewhat more credible that teleology operates within the universe, than that the current model of efficient causality is the final word. But to have teleology, one needs to assume, at a minimum, that the universe is grounded in some sort of intelligence or immanent design, that guides things from the beginning. I agree that, at this level, it need not be anthropomorphized. On the other hand, it makes the most sense as an active and purposeful intelligence, and therefore, by analogy, it is reasonable to anthropomorphize it, since human beings are the closest thing we know of to such a Being.
