robert, i'd go a step further and say history has shown us that no system of human government has worked well for a majority of people for an extended period of time. my view is that self interest is not bad, in and of itself. it is when the values that drive the self interest are screwed up. if someone values drugs and acts on that self interest, they are really working against their true self interest. since all humans have a screwed up value system - any differences are qualitative and not quantitative - we are where we are. it is awful easy to blame others, though. it is much more difficult to review one's own life and make improvements. i know from personal experience! :-(
