With inflation running at a minimum of around 3% for the last 25 years the inflation adjusted return on savings accounts is probably negative too. The market is a secular thing. <g> Was not trying to defend the indefensible, just pointing out that the move to mutual funds is a more probable cause of the diminished savings rate than a tendency to spend everything one earns.
