if you are playing games, pent 4 and the best video card you can afford, other then that they are way out hand for what is needed. Pent III should be fine, 933 Mhz, the diff between and 1 gig and that is nothing and would last for the next five years, you would save $50 that way, 128 sdram more the better, hard drive, I have hard time believing anyone will fill them up now unless they are storing music, get a fast one so your are not disk bound. oh, get a cd read/ write, so you can burn your own CDs. the diff in price is about $100 well worth it. If you can open it up and install a card and have good modem, don't buy another, you can back that out. Get a 19 inch trinitron screen. Make sure you get the Microsoft Wheel mouse, I love the wheel. Too bad they don't have the Microsoft natural keyboard as an option, I love mine, very speedy.

Here is a pent III

Here is a pent 4,

which should I get....not a techie

Venkie,

If you do not have any need for memory hogging applications..... graphics designing..... serious multitasking (multiple applications running simultaneously) or if you're a super serious video game junkie..... then you might want to consider a Pentium III with 256 megs of SDRAM. Perhaps upgrade the monitor, the graphics card & the sound system. Get a CD burner too.

FWIW, I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 1 Gig Pentium III with 256 megs of SDRAM, upgraded the monitor, got the upgraded video card & CD burner too. Got the Altec Lansiing speaker upgrade (with sub-woofer). It absolutely smokes! And it is several hundreds of dollars less than a Pentium IV. I have a few video games for it & they run just great. The sound form the speakers is fantastic. Plays CD's & the music from the internet is excellent (you might need a high speed internet connection for good internet music though).

My internet access speeds are improved over my older notebook (233 Meg Pentium I with 64 Megs of RAM). I can run multiple applications while surfing the internet with few problems. I have been using A&T&'s cable broadband access on both computers & my P-III just smokes online.

FWIW, I'm quite satisfied with the overall performance of my P-III..... And the $$$ savings over a P-IV was fairly significant. I would have purchased a P-IV if there were applications that demanded the extra performance a P-IV provides...... but there just aren't any applications I know of that need the extra juice..... so I pocketed the $$$ & got the P-III.
