CIENA's CoreDirector Awarded Network Magazine Product of the Year
LINTHICUM, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2001--CIENA Corporation (NASDAQ: CIEN - news), a global leader in intelligent optical networking systems and software, today announced that its MultiWave CoreDirector(TM) has been awarded Network Magazine's ``Product of the Year'' award in the Internet Core Device category.
CIENA will accept the award today in conjunction with NetWorld+Interop 2001 in Las Vegas.
CoreDirector is the market's leading intelligent optical core switching system that provides the high-bandwidth switching, protection and provisioning capabilities for next-generation optical networking.
With built-in networking intelligence, CoreDirector uses advanced software designed to enable service providers to quickly create and deliver differentiable, dynamic new optical services at any time, any size and any priority.
With density up to 640 Gbps/bay, scalability to OC-768, and granularity to STS-1, CoreDirector enables carriers to design new, highly customized services while eliminating the need for additional legacy SONET/SDH add/drop multiplexers, digital cross-connects, and optical cross-connects.
Recent studies show that CoreDirector is a cost-effective network solution (providing capital expense savings, operational expense savings and revenue enhancements) and that in the first year alone CoreDirector could provide economic benefits of more than three times the initial capital investment relative to legacy networking solutions.(a)
``CIENA's suite of intelligent optical switching systems allows fast edge-to-core service provisioning across the network for next-generation applications,'' said Dan Klausmeier, chief technology officer of CIENA's Core Switching Division.
``We're pleased to receive this award on behalf of so many committed employees throughout CIENA who have dedicated themselves to bringing this outstanding product to market.
``We particularly would like to acknowledge our customers who have partnered with us to simplify the network core, to eliminate unnecessary network costs, and to enable new revenue services previously not possible with older legacy architectures.''
Network Magazine's editors, with help from the analyst, vendor and user communities, select winners based on several criteria. The winning products display significant new capabilities ahead of their competitors; represent breakthroughs in performance and price; and solve problems that affect a wide cross section of the magazine's readers.
A winning product must have been available for deployment in the year 2000, and had to be the most significant product in its category.
