Hey, Buzz is BUZZ...Couch
SITE/LAUNCH: Couch Confessions couchconfessions.com Launch: Apr. 16, 2001 Couch Confessions INexTV Corp. 135 E. 57th St. 20th Floor New York, NY 10022 CONTACT/MODEL: Peter Boyd, VP, Business Development 212/735-1029 Free; ad banners; CPM: variable REVIEW: Another streaming media show that wants to be a TV program when it grows up. Couch Confessions gives viewers 2-3 minute snippets of mock therapy sessions -- soap opera boiled down to its essence - and, of course, everyone has sexual issues. The shameless voyeurism is poorly disguised as authentic self-help. Still, the daily clips are well staged and decently acted. The site layout has a lot of good hooks, giving users many opportunities to follow the cast of "patients" and even preview upcoming clips - great for drive-by users as well as those who want to drill. Nevertheless, everything hangs on the viewer's willingness to suspend disbelief and play along with the obvious charade. While iNexTV is superficially cagey about the fabricated nature of the "sessions," these actors are obviously doing improv. Tony Soprano and Dr. Melfi are more compelling and believable. This is the soap opera equivalent of professional wrestling, which means that no matter how much snobs like us sniff, it could take flight with its viral marketing campaign.
