I was in a rush, and therefore did not track down the figure for the '80s. However, I doubt that the growth rate was so good, and even counting inflation, say from '85 (more realistically, it would not be so high.

Reagan knew that the debt would be reduced long before 30 years were out. As seems to be occuring......

Of course, the Russian economy is a fraction of the old Soviet economy. In the late '80s, GDP was about $2700 billion. (See 2.2. in link):
