BY AND LARGE, where profits go, so go stock prices. And one way to predict a profit surge is to look for upward revisions in analysts' earnings estimates.

Out of this idea, the SmartMoney.com earnings-revision screen — one of our most popular — was born.

Of course, the earnings outlook for the broader market is still pretty dreary. In the past four weeks, this year's earnings estimates for the S&P 500 have fallen 2.2% and next year's have fallen 1.8%, according to Zacks Research Wizard. But the companies that survived our screen — mostly in the energy and health-care sectors — saw estimates for 2001 rise more than 1% and estimates for 2002 rise more than 2%.
