Will,

Not really surprising. Imagine life after 80 years of no entrepreneurship or private ownership. The schools were there for no reason other than to brainwash the populace into submission. The sole purpose of the Government was to steal from the peasants, and keep the elite rich and comfortable.

Anyone with a good idea was tossed in jail. How long can a system like that survive?

I suspect that economic growth in the Soviet Union was a myth
They had to have something going on. Russia was not that important at the time of the revolution and it grew to a major world player.

I think the real heros of the cold war were the Beatles. They (and the rest of the rock and roll counterculture) captured the imagination of the soviet post war generation, and it was just a matter of time until the old guard died off.

As the emirates demonstrate, one can earn a lot through exploiting resources. The problem is that there is little or no consumer satisfaction, because the allocation of resources has nothing to do with overall demand, but with political fiat. Thus, there were a lot of tanks and AK- 47s, but no toilet paper, long lines at the produce market, and the rationing of meat......
