Brazil opposition requests high-profile graft probe

Brasília, 09 - Brazil´s opposition earlier Wednesday submitted to Senate
president Jáder Barbalho a petition requesting the establishment of a high-profile
inquiry into corruption allegations that involve key government officials.

The petition comes as several high-ranking politicians see themselves connected
with fraudulent schemes.

As soon as the inquiry is set up, Brazil´s Congress will kick off investigations into
alleged embezzlement of funds from now defunct development agencies Sudam
and Sudene, as well as from the contruction of a courthouse building in São
Paulo.

Barbalho is believed to be involved in a Sudam swindle, while Fernando Bezerra
on Tuesday resigned as National Integration Minister for his alleged role in the
misappropriation of funds from Sudene.

Separately, two high-ranking senators are likely to face impeachment
proceedings for violating Senate vote confidentiality rules.

In late April, former Senate head Antonio Carlos Magalhães and former
government leader at the upper house senator José Roberto Arruda admitted to
having accessed the tally of a secret vote that resulted in the expulsion of a
fellow member in June 2000.

President Fernando Henrique Cardoso has tried to block the corruption probe,
alleging that a high-profile investigation at this point in time would halt the
voting of key reforms in Congress.

These reforms include new corporate governance norms and a
much-procrastinated tax overhaul.
