CB, Japan's situation is instructive since it cannot be blamed on the gold standard nor trade restrictions. I blame it on credit excesses leading to malinvestment. The US continues to buy the world's surplus goods on credit but this cannot continue indefinitely. We ( the US) are just beginning to pay the price for our own credit excesses. Mike
