Press Release
IBM Adds RAID Subsystem to Its Growing Range Of SANmark Qualified Products
ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R Now Proven SAN-ready
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 2001--Today IBM announced that its ProFibre Storage Array(TM) DF1100R RAID subsystem has successfully completed the Fibre Channel Industry Association's (FCIA) SANmark(TM) Qualification program. With its SANmark qualification, the ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R has now passed compatibility testing with other SANmark products within storage area networks (SANs).

In February, IBM also announced that the Mylex SANArray(TM) FFx external RAID controller passed the SANmark test suite. The ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R uses an external RAID controller that is based on the architecture inherent in Mylex's SANArray FFx RAID controller, making it an ideal RAID subsystem for a SAN environment.

Targeted at system integrators, OEMs and value-added resellers, the ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R features advanced IBM hardware and software design technology to enable high performance and reliable delivery of large amounts of data.

SANmark Qualification, a program developed by the FCIA, requires a product to pass a series of rigorous tests designed to ensure multi-vendor compatibility in common network operations. Products that complete the SANmark Qualification promote heterogeneous Fibre Channel networks and SANs. IBM has been an FCIA member since the association's inception.

``Compatibility is the primary reason why customers are apprehensive about implementing a SAN environment. The SANmark qualification takes the trial-and-error burden of testing away from our customers and gives them confidence that the ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R is compatible in their SAN,'' said Suresh Panikar, director of product marketing for IBM OEM RAID storage solutions. ``Working with the FCIA on the SANmark Qualification program further strengthens our commitment to ensure the interoperability of our products within a SAN.''

``Although many of our members are in competition with one another, we all share the same goal -- the continued success of heterogeneous Fibre Channel SANs. As RAID subsystems are an important component to the performance of the Fibre Channel network, IBM has made a wise step by ensuring the compatibility of its ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R with other SANmark Qualified vendors,'' said Skip Jones, FCIA board chairman.``

``SAN complexity can be a major stumbling block for users,'' said John Webster senior analyst at Illuminata. ``Companies who work with the FCIA and other standards organizations to ensure standards conformance via programs like the FCIA's SANmark will ultimately simplify SAN implementations for users. This will lead to wider acceptance of and better technology for SANs.''

ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R Curtails SAN Costs with Reliable Fault Tolerance and Easy Scalability

The ten-bay ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R helps ensure high availability by utilizing advanced, fault-tolerant redundancy features -- such as hot swappable drives; mirrored cache; dual active Mylex RAID controllers with transparent failover and failback; dual interface modules host SANmapping; and dual power units and cooling components.

Additionally, software for the ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R enhances both data manageability and availability. IBM utilizes Mylex's SANArray(TM) Manager to enable easy configuration, monitoring and management of network RAID from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

Constructed with sophisticated vibration dampening material, the subsystem is designed to significantly reduce disk-drive vibration, resulting in fewer misreads, missed rotations and false error messages, thereby improving service costs. Adaptive cooling and automatic environmental monitoring further improving reliability, while also reducing noise and vibration.

System administrators can daisy-chain ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R enclosures to build massive storage systems containing up to 80 high-capacity, high-performance Fibre Channel disk drives. Such orders-of-magnitude scalability -- up to 5.8 terabytes -- protects initial storage investments and allows for easy migration to higher-capacity, standard 19-inch rack configurations.

Platform Support and Availability

The ProFibre Storage Array DF1100R supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 0+1 and JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) and is also configured to support Windows NT and Windows 2000 server platforms. The product is shipping now to OEMs and the IBM Technology Group (TG) worldwide sales and channel network, which includes distributors, resellers and system integrators.
