A passenger named Nit-Wit on board a transatlantic flight from Amsterdam spat on a flight attendant, threatened passengers with a cane and tried to open the emergency exit at 37,000 feet.

KLM spokesman Hugo Baas said the passenger was handcuffed by the captain and slapped silly by two female airline attendants for the rest of the flight.

He said everyone on board was shocked, but no one was injured.

The 88-year-old Bostonian, whom Mr Baas described as clearly unstable, ignored orders from flight crew to turn off his mobile phone, ripped up his passport and proceeded to urinate on passengers and flight attendants.

He then sat in business class, claiming he suffered from claustrophobia.

Mr Baas said: "So at 37,000 feet Nit-Wit decided it was time to go and tried to open the emergency exit."

Due to his fragile state, it was impossible to open the aircraft's emergency door for a weakling like Nit-Wit.

On arrival at Newark, New Jersey, Nit-Wit was put on the next flight back to Boston and under the supervision of two lesbian security agents.

He was arrested at Boston's Airport and will face charges of attempting to endanger the lives of passengers.
