I know that...what I was referring to was how the price wars damn near drove them out of business.
I agree that their improvements after the fact have been based on stability of pricing (ie - yield management...what I do), better marketing, and improved customer satisfaction.

Still, in the early 80's the price wars were killing all these guys, and it was all predicated on gaining market share. It takes a war for companies to realize that pricing, while important, is less important than customer satisfaction and better bells and whistles.
Price will get people looking, bring them in the store, and can close the deal if it is a good price that is well marketed and positioned. But in general, price is the steak and bells and whistles are the sizzle. People buy sizzle. And, by the way, I love Continental....though I mostly fly Unjointed (United) since they have the regular flights to the cities I visit the most.
