Never had the guts to scuba dive next to them. Don't worry! I've been around Orcas off and on for most of my life and have never seen them do something nasty to humans but they sure do have a lot of power!

Our usual procedure is to figure out where the pod is and then move about 1/2 mile in front of their path and just shut down and wait for them to go by. The pod (10 to as many as 50 plus individuals) split as they go around the boat. Some dive or surface within just a few feet of the boat and you can hear them talking as the sound reverberates through the hull. Never had a disappointed whale watcher after encounters like that!

They are really being loved to death up here. I don't expect people to be able to see them up close in the not to distant future. The government is going to declare them "endangered" shortly and that will kill whale watching in the northwest especially for the commercial whale watching outfits. But us private boat owners who happen to be at the right place and the right time will still have the luxury of experiencing them.
