Lesbian child molestors?

Interesting. That's what the people who state they are from ASTN are calling me, besides a porno queen, slumlord, hooker and various words I can't post.

I noticed that all federal cases are listed for public companies on financial sites such as Hoovers and in the sleuth reports. I could understand why a company would not want to sue or be sued in federal court. Looks like a good reason to take things to federal court.

Felice apology brings closure

First, "thank you" Pinnacle readers and advertisers who stuck with us during our terrifying ordeal that began last October with a vile and hateful anonymous Web site attacking the newspaper and two of its employees – and ends today with an apology from the culprit.

We now know what many of you said you suspected all along: that it was Joe Felice, a sitting councilman at the time. He has admitted it and today apologizes on the front page.

The Web site was designed to discredit and damage The Pinnacle by slandering columnist Bob Valenzuela with the false child molestation allegation and ridiculing me by revealing my sexual orientation and falsely linking me to pornography.

In a less tolerant community, it very well could have had the effect the author intended.

What happened in the end, I believe, was exactly the opposite of what Felice wanted when he sat at his home computer and created the hate site. You rallied around us, offering support through phone calls, letters and e-mails. Because of you, we worked harder to make the newspaper even better and continued to push for the smart growth policies for which we were attacked. Our nomination in April for a prestigious Pulitzer Prize by the executive editor of the San Jose Mercury News, I believe, shows we are succeeding in our efforts to constantly improve The Pinnacle, though the award went elsewhere. Still, we keep trying.

While worldwide publicity about the case might have made Hollister and San Benito County seem like an intolerant place, I believe just the opposite has proven true.

You never believed the false accusations against Valenzuela, and for that we are grateful. Conservative ranchers, people old enough to be my grandparents and many people in between told us that for the first time in their lives they understood the torment people often go through because of their sexual orientation. They told us that nothing should matter except that we are good journalists and productive members of the community, which is all we ever wanted to be.

It’s my sincere belief that this ordeal has served to raise the collective consciousness of the community, that now even more people will judge others by what they contribute and by the strength of their character, and not by a label someone tries to affix to them.

If that is true, then to me, at least, all of the heartache and uncertainty we went through is worth it. I’m proud to call San Benito County my home.
