So far nobody on this thread mentioned the importance of the age curve on macroeconomy. When looking at Japan and US, the curves are radically different, to the effect that a formidable army of 30-50 year olds in Japan, saving and not spending, is taking care of the baby boomers' spending ideas in US. When these 30-50s move into 50-70s mode, the tide will turn around - assuming there'll be still some water to flow back to Nihon.
