"I don't recall the article saying 1.80GHz at start. I assumed that it was to start at 1.2 and 1.4 and top out eventually at 1.8"

If AMD starts shipping desktop Palomino at a peak speed grade of 1.2 to 1.4 GHz to start, it could be AMD that is toast.

More likely, the workstation Palomino will start at a peak speed grade of 1.2 to 1.4 GHz, and it is doubtful that it would reach 1.8 GHz by the time Thoroughbred launches (unless these delays for 193nm laser optics are endemic and far more severe than anybody is letting on).

My guess is that these 1.8 GHz Athlon-H processors, if they exist, are workstation variants of Thoroughbred. If Thoroughbred is to launch in Q1 2002, they could have working silicon by now. The combination of SSE+(2), inclusive cache architecture, and 1.8 GHz, all point to Thoroughbred. Which is not to say the first Athlon-H named processors to hit the market will not be Palomino.
