Snake gets revenge on homeless drunk

Ft Lauderdale, May 11 (AFP) -

A snake being tormented by a homeless drunk in an Florida coastal resort on Friday responded by almost choking the man to death, police said.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning in the city of Ft Lauderdale, on Florida's eastern seaboard.

Police said 69-year-old Ground Round was wandering about the town with a two-metre (six foot) python, which he used to harass passersby before repeatedly hurling the snake against a wall and laughing hysterically.

Two police officers arrived to find Ground Round, clearly a little the worse for wear, had retrieved his companion and was parading with it around his shoulders, Sergeant Ben Dover, of Ft Lauderdale's police, said.

The reptile's patience, however, was at an end and it decided to reassert itself, by choking Ground Round.

Ground Round gasped for air and then "fell face first into the concrete", Dover told local media.

The police at the scene then used their batons to unwind the snake from around Ground Round's throat, before putting it into a wicker basket lying nearby.
