OT re "Does anyone remember that England ruled (and the Spanish and the Dutch before her), because of geography"

Geography had nothing to do with it. England was a cold little island on the periphery, a lot like Japan, until they made themselves the center. The English ruled the world thru most of the 1700s and 1800s, because at that time they had the best soldiers and engineers in the world. Same with the Spanish before that, and the Romans before them. And the U.S. will be on top, as long as we continue to have the world's best soldiers and engineers. It helps that many of the best Indian and Chinese minds emigrate to California.

When China has a Stanford University, and Americans emigrate there to be where the action is, then it'll be time to pass the baton to them. In 50 years, maybe.
